19th Annual Hogskin History Day

The 19th annual Hogskin History Day, sponsored by 91.9 FM/WUOT and East TN PBS will be held Saturday, September 29th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center, 1936 Liberty Hill Rd, Washburn. Hogskin History Day is a celebration of the history, music, and culture of the Hogskin Valley and surrounding Appalachian communities. Guests will enjoy lots of good local food and entertainment as well as a chance to win up to $2000+. We extend a special welcome to our young friends with plenty of games, crafts, cakewalks, henna painting and bubble blowing. Delicious food, including homemade pizza from our cob oven, bean burritos, beans, cornbread, home baked goods and more will be available for purchase. In the afternoon we will offer free apple juice from our hand-cranked press using local organic apples. And yes, we will again provide free hand-cranked homemade ice cream on a first come first served basis (see event schedule for times apple juice and ice cream will be served). Tours of our “off the grid”, environmentally friendly Narrow Ridge buildings and homes as well as our Natural Burial Preserve will be scheduled in the afternoon. Local vendors and exhibitors will showcase crafts from old time wool spinning to jewelry and art utilizing recycled/repurposed materials. Door prizes will be given every hour.   • PECANS ARE HERE ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! The Union County Lions Club will be selling pecans beginning on November 1, 2017 at the following locations:  Commercial Bank (Maynardville Branch); First Century Bank (Maynardville Branch); and the Union County Trustee’s Office located in the Union County Courthouse.  The cost per one pound package is $10.00.  Packages available this year include halves, dark chocolate covered whole pecans, and whole white covered pecans.  Proceeds from the sale of these pecans will provide eye examinations and eyeglasses for qualifying Union County residents.  Please contact Ronnie Mincey (865-278-6430) for further information.
